Cambodia is an enchanting land where the ancient and modern converge. As the location of the former Khmer Empire, it is blessed with immense historical attractions. During the Angkorian period the Khmer dynasty ruled much of what is now Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. This can be witnessed at the fabled temples of Angkor – monuments unrivalled in scale and grandeur anywhere else in Asia. Phnom Penh is a charismatic capital with colonial heritage, a smart riverside promenade and a gleaming Grand Palace. Siem Reap has luxury hotels that cater for visitors to the Angkor temples.
Upon arrival at Phnom Penh Airport we are met by our guide to transfer to our hotel where the official check-in time is 2 pm. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure. Overnight in Phnom Penh.

If time permits, we will learn about traditional arts at Champey Academy of Arts before lunch. We then take a sobering trip to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Also known as S-21, it served as a prisoner camp during the Khmer Rouge regime. Our final stop is Russian Market, where we can put our haggling skills to the test and barter for souvenirs. Dinner is at our leisure. Please note: Visitors to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are required to keep their knees and shoulders covered. Guests must sign a disclaimer form before the cyclo tour. Take a step back in time to colonial Phnom Penh with this innovative heritage tour by tuk tuk tour. From the hotel, we will drive to the meeting point at Khema La Poste restaurant. Located in the capital’s heritage heart, this is an apt starting point for our adventure. Here, we will be met by our tuk tuk and given headphones and a digital tablet loaded with an informative video guide. The guide features 24 informative sequences that take us on a route marked out by 19 stops, presenting 22 different sites that date back to when Cambodia was under French rule. The video guide reveals the history of each place through films; vintage photos and historical anecdotes, with additional functions to virtually explore some buildings not open to the public. After the tour is over, we have lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we visit a museum that showcases the monetary system of Cambodia over the last 2,000 years is one of our many informative optional excursions. The Sosoro Museum is a fascinating institution that tells the story of Cambodia from the perspective of cash and the impacts money has had on society and the politics of the nation throughout time. From the currencies of the mighty Angkor Empire to the abolition of money during the Khmer Rouge era, this attraction offers a captivating insight into all aspects of Cambodian life. The museum is housed in a newly-restored French colonial building in the heart of the capital and it features interactive touch screens, games and videos. The museum is a new addition to our current list of Phnom Penh’s must-do activities. Please note: The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays and public holidays. Respectful attire is required, the same as is required at the Royal Palace and the National Museum. Hats and sunglasses are not allowed within. Then, we spend a memorable evening soaking up the sunset while cruising along the revered Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers. We will be picked up from our hotel and drive to Phnom Penh’s floating pier to board our boat. We will then embark on a gentle cruise along the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers, which confluence in the capital. As the sun sinks into the horizon, we can enjoy a fresh coconut juice and watch the vibrant capital spring to life as the city’s lights start to twinkle. On our cruise, we will pass by fishermen finishing for the day and working boats cruising the waterway as we leave the capital behind. We then return to the pier and transfer to our hotel. Please note: This excursion is on a joining cruise basis.

Direction northwest today, we cross bamboo forests before reaching the village of Voeune Saï located on the left bank of the Sé San river; the view on the Chinese village on the other side of the river is quite pretty. Besides, this place is nearly a Chinese enclave in Cambodian territory, some villagers don't even speak Khmer. Upstream of the Se San is Kaoh Peak, a village of the Kachok minority that practices funeral statuary, then we go back towards Banlung for a trip through rubber plantations towards the nearby waterfall of Teuk Cha Ong, we end up with a detour to Yaklaom lake, a beautiful and perfectly-round stretch of water surrounded by forest, for a late afternoon swim. We’re going full North today, heading towards Laos and the village of Taveng. We first cross Veyrum Plang, a round lava field in the forest; a few steps away there is a small waterfall (in the rainy season only) surrounded by tigers caves. Later on, we stop at some nice Kroeung villages located in the forest on both sides of the road. The more North we go, the more beautiful the forest. In some Kroeung villages, depending on the season, we might discover some quite impressive bachelor houses built on very high stilts. Let’s notice that, when they have achieved their goal and when the young man has become head of a family, these houses are destroyed before being raised again by younger men the following season. Depending on the time and the state of the dirt road, we will choose a location for a picnic before exploring the nearby villages, then go back towards Banlung for a trip through rubber plantations towards the nearby waterfalls of Kachagn and Katieng. Dinner is at the lodge. Please note: Rooms at Terres Rouges Lodge are fan-only, with no TV and minibar. Overnight in Ratanakiri.
